Discovery of talented duo Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike are another duo formed by Steve and Ruben under the stage name of Wolfpack. Early in on their career they have achieved notable success with their debut release on ‘Smash The House’, ‘Rising Moon’, but also a remix for none other than Billboard heavyweight and US chart royalty Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Ginuwine’s as they relicked their global smash hit ‘Get Involved!’

This talented act, who hail from Dimitri and Mike’s hometown of Willebroek, rapidly becoming the epicentre of rising musical talent in Belgium, have been described by the brothers as ‘diamonds in the rough’ and ‘one of the most promising talents around’. “When we caught them live they just blew us away,” said Dimitri Vegas, “but then when we listened to their productions we were like, wow! We knew if we didn’t sign them up to Smash The House there and then, someone else would and we’d be left kicking ourselves for not being quick enough.”

Opening the set for Dimitri Vegas in Delhi, Wolfpack – Ruben and Steve sat down for an interview with us and revealed that they are a couple of fun loving guys besides having good talent.

INTERVIEW WITH WOLFPACK

Q1. Where does the name come from?

Steve: Actually came from the film ‘Hangover’. Those guys were kind of like us. Always doing shit together and taking care of each other.

Q2. Does it also reflect on how wolves work in packs and not solo?

Steve: Yea! Sometimes I have to go perform alone without Ruben and it’s never the same. We grew up together and known each other since we are 10 years old. I started playing at around the age of 13 at weddings etc. He used to play hip hop at first.

Q3. How is it opening for Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike? Do you think of them as fellow wolves?

Steve: Definitely. (Like) Mike has been Ruben’s friend since childhood. We all grew up together in Belgium.

Q4. Do you feel the origin of the artist is obvious in their work?

Steve: The thing is that every artist you can feel where they have came from and what their past is. In Dimitri’s case he started with a hardcore style and took it to progressive house. It’s the same music but with a stronger vibe which everybody likes now. You can see where he came from, from what he plays today. Also Mike was always into hip-hop and it comes easy to him to use the mic. So I think you can see where each artist comes from in his or her music.

Q5. Other musicians from Belgium you like?

Ruben: I like DJ Coone

Steve: from Holland, Hardwell is a good buddy of mine whom I like.

Belgium and Holland together is growing strong in the House scene.

Q6. Do you think artists from same region help each other out in making them popular?

Steve: everybody thinks big shot DJ don’t help each other. But it is not. If I need something they are more than willing to help each other.

Q7. India – is it your first time here? What have you heard of this country? Heard any music from here?

Ruben: Actually we haven’t heard anything. It is a big surprise. First time we played here. Amazed at the vibe people gave us. We were pretty tired from the flight and we thought ‘Oh god, this is going to be hard’ but from the first track we put on crowd gave us so much energy. I hope it is going to be the same today.

It was one of the best sets ever that we played in Mumbai.

Q8. What are your other interests besides music?

Steve: I just don’t know what to answer.

Ruben:  Yea, we have not much time. Most of the time I am in front of my computer. When not in front of computer, I have to spend time with my girlfriend. Travelling and carrying suitcases- takes a lot of time to make music. Make sure you have lot of music to play in your sets and making contact with people.

Steve: We enjoy good food. Something we put time in is to find good food.

Ruben: We tried Indian food. It was very nice! Been sick all day. I had the complete chili pepper yesterday. He said “are you a man or not?” so I had to eat it.

Q9. Craziest thing you have done?

Ruben: Stage dive in Brazil Sao Paolo. It was at a club and the jump was from quite a height of like 2 meters.

Q10. What according to you guys is essential for a crazy night in a club?

Steve: Good crowd and good vibe in the club. DJ is important but if the crowd is not good, it could be the best DJ in the world and you would not have a good time.

Ruben: Good sound is important. But we hardly go out to party. We just always travelling and working and partying at the same time. When we are home we just sleep and spend time with our girlfriends.

Q11. What’s next for the Wolfpack?

Steve: Tomorrowland. It is in our hometown. Every DJ who has played there looks forward to it. We are also going to Brazil, and Portugal to play.

Q12. Is the whole family is going to be at Tomorrowland?

Steve: No doubt. It’s in the same street as we grew up in. With Dimitri, the grandparents come and the mother comes. It’s like a family happening for us.

Steve and Ruben stuck around for Dimitri’s set as well and entertained the crowd with champagne showers, Vodka shots and wild antics. Oh! And Steve also asked for a plate of food inbetween his set. But refrained from showering people with it.
